At initial consultation, allow yourself approximately one hour for your appointment, as time will be needed to take a thorough medical history and perform an appropriate physical examination. Your medical history is extremely important as it gives the chiropractor a good understanding of your general health and details of your specific complaint. A physical examination will then follow, where you may need to change into an examination gown, and various orthopaedic, neurological and chiropractic tests will be performed, in order for the chiropractor to diagnose the cause of your complaint and determine how best to treat you. In certain instances, further investigations may also be necessary, such as x-rays and/or other laboratory tests.
Once a final diagnosis is formed, the findings and proposed treatment will be explained and discussed with you, and treatment will commence. If however, the chiropractor establishes that your complaint cannot be treated by chiropractic care, you will then be referred to the most appropriate healthcare provider for further treatment.
